Open Volunteer Positions

FiLiA is a women’s rights organisation with charitable status in England, Wales and Scotland. Our purpose is to defend women’s human rights, amplify the voices of women, particularly those who are seldom heard, and to build sisterhood and solidarity. We hold the largest feminist conference in Europe and work on local and national projects which focus on a range of areas affecting women, particularly those who are often deemed ‘hard to reach’.

As part of this we need some help and are looking for volunteers to support us with the following:

Finance Lead (Volunteer): 6–8 hours/month

FiLiA is looking for a volunteer to lead on its financial strategy and oversight, working closely with and reporting to the Board of Trustees to ensure the charity’s financial health and future. This is an important role, which will support FiLiA’s sustainability and longevity.

Key Tasks

  • Review budgets and spending every month, identifying variances and trends with support from the bookkeeper

  • Review the bookkeeper’s financial reports and present them to the Board of Trustees

  • Provide financial insights to support strategic decisions regarding FiLiA's projects and campaigns

  • Lead on the review of financial policies and processes, preparing draft documents for the Board of Trustees

  • Ensure compliance with charity law in relation to financial responsibilities, tax regulations and reporting standards

  • Liaise with the bookkeeper and accountant to enable them to prepare the annual accounts

  • Support and oversee the Finance Administrator

  • Undertake other, similar tasks that the Board of Trustees may request.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • A feminist, who agrees with FiLiA’s values, ethics and approach

  • Strong technical understanding of budgeting, financial reporting and monitoring

  • Experience of preparing financial reports for a board or senior leadership

  • Proficient in IT, including Microsoft Office and Google Drive

  • Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills

  • Understanding of, and commitment to, FiLiA's aims and key principles.

Desirable:

  • Experience of finance leadership in the third sector

  • Familiarity with charity law in relation to financial responsibilities, tax regulations and reporting standards

  • Familiarity with bookkeeping software.


Finance Administrator (Volunteer): 1–2 hours/week

FiLiA is also looking for a detail-oriented volunteer to support the day-to-day running of our finances, helping to ensure FiLiA's resources are managed accurately and efficiently. This is an important role, which will support FiLiA’s sustainability and longevity.

Key Tasks

  • Work with the Conference Team to set the budget and monitor and advise on income and expenditure, contributing to monthly Conference organising meetings

  • Check expense claims for correct receipts, accurate amounts and valid bank details

  • Verify that all invoice and expense-claim totals are correct

  • Save and file receipts and invoices in an organised and accessible way

  • Review FiLiA's income and costs and identify opportunities to maximise income

  • Respond to queries from the bookkeeper and other team members regarding financial records

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records

  • Undertake other, similar tasks that the Finance Lead or Board of Trustees may request.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • A feminist, who agrees with FiLiA’s values, ethics and approach

  • Experience with financial administration, including checking expenses, invoices and receipts

  • Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy

  • Proficient in IT, including Microsoft Office and Google Drive

  • Good organisation and time-management skills

  • Able to work flexibly, both independently, and as part of a team

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Understanding of, and commitment to, FiLiA's aims and key principles.

Desirable:

  • Experience of finance administration in the third sector

  • Experience of reviewing budgets

  • Experience of maximising income

  • Familiarity with bookkeeping software.
